Did you know improving IT systems to better serve customers is described as a ‘critical priority’ for nearly a third of IT decision-makers?

Furthermore, deliberately using multiple cloud deployment types is named as a top strategic objective (79%).

That’s according to a new study from Forrester, which assessed Hybrid IT and how an organisation can effectively operate in this world.

As organisations shift to Hybrid IT environments, growing networks of applications and services across multiple clouds (and legacy systems) breeds complexity.

On top of this, the nature of cloud applications makes many businesses uneasy when their data and information is not housed on-premises. Therefore, it is important for businesses to better manage applications and services.

In order to tune this complexity with Hybrid IT, organisations can use service orchestration.

Forrester describes this as:

“The processes, procedures, policies and tools implemented to manage numerous suppliers, services and systems. The orchestrated whole should deliver a seamless and secure user experience, ultimately aligned to the objectives of the business.”

Furthermore, Forrester advises “Service orchestration requires a unified strategy and approach across IT and the business”. To improve an organisation’s ability to adapt to and meet customer expectations, firms must adopt Hybrid IT environments.

This Hybrid IT environment gives organisations the flexibility and agility to adapt to changes in the market, so orchestration can unify strategies from both IT and the business. However, as I wrote about in October last year; orchestration must also occur on multiple layers in order to be effective, Forrester references a similar layered approach in their most recent research paper.

As Hybrid IT takes hold, it’s crucial for organisations to properly integrate and manage legacy and cloud architectures. Orchestration is crucial for making this a reality, enabling end users to be seamlessly connect with the customer via the necessary business systems.

Forrester recommends the following three points to help improve management and orchestration of applications and services:

1) Appoint a service orchestration champion

This is to create a unified strategy and approach across IT and the rest of the business.

Ultimately, an organisation improves its ability to adapt to customer expectations by adopting Hybrid IT. It gives the capability to be both flexible and agile while adapting to changes in the market.

Service orchestration is needed to unify strategies from both IT and the business. 

2) Look for service partners that are experts in Hybrid IT

This will help to build an orchestration strategy for your organisation.

Co-creating with technology partners means more skills and expertise, backed up with a track record in helping organisations meet their service orchestration goals.

In turn, an organisation will be able to maximise the effectiveness of its Hybrid IT environmental mix.

3) Recognise that orchestration must occur on multiple layers

While service orchestration is a common starting point (e.g. increased speed, control, and agility across disaggregated platforms), it must also take place around supplier management, security, compliance, and digital supply chain efficiency to build a truly efficient environment.
